A 1920s Style Rent Party

Inspired by Harlem, NY rent parties of the 1920s and 30s. Rent parties were an innovate response from Families finding a means to keep a roof over their heads during tough economic times! The host family invited friends and neighbors into their apartments a menu of soul food, jazz music by local musicians, poetry reading and dancing. Guest in turn donated money to help pay the rent. It was a powerful demonstration of community.

Please plan to attend HIP's 2011 rent party for great fun and to help lower income working families in our community evade homelessness.
