Summary Tom has been a sustaining donor to Housing Initiatives of Princeton since 2004, when the first floor apartment of Prescott House was dedicated to the memory of his late wife, Tu-Anh Pham. Princeton residents since 1994, Knobel and Pham had been attracted to the town's village life and proximity to Manhattan, where Pham was Vice President at Alger Management in the World Trade Center. When Knobel first became aware of HIP's mission to provide transitional housing to homeless families and individuals, he recalls, "it was an easy sell. My late wife was all about transition. As a Vietnamese refugee in the mid-70s, she understood what it meant to lose everything, to struggle against odds, and to begin again. She had navigated the delicate balance between pride and the genuine graciousness due those who helped her family make their way in a new country and culture." Even as an accomplished and successful professional, Pham experienced intolerance and bias related to both gender and race. "She fought through it, later mentoring friends and colleagues in their battles, ever an example, always generous with her time." Had she an opportunity to support HIP, Knobel says, "Tu-Anh would have been first in line." In 2002, Knobel and his young daughter Vivi left Princeton and moved back to his small hometown in upstate New York, where he writes, serves on local arts and service-related boards, and continues to support HIP’s work. "It's increasingly apparent to me how harsh are the realities facing women and their families trying to break free from cycles of abuse, violence, and dependency. The bigger the boost, the more community-based the transition, the better the chances for lasting success. The support and housing provided by HIP could help underscore or reset positive aspirations. Our support will continue because it’s needed and in celebration of Tu-Anh’s life."
