Inspired by Harlem rent parties of the 1920s and 30s. In tough times, residents invited friends and neighbors over for an impromptu celebration of jazz, soul food, poetry and dancing. Guests paid a small admission fee to help raise the rent. Neighbors helping neighbors reflects HIP's own work supporting lower income working parents in our midst to evade homelessness and improve opportunities for themselves and their children. |
