Bridging the gap between homelessness and hope one family at a time

Housing Initiatives of Princeton (HIP)
Names Carol Golden Interim Board Chair

Carol Golden

At the HIP board meeting on November 9th the Board of Trustees voted to elect Ms. Golden Interim Chair effective January 1, 2016. HIP’s current Board Chair, Ruth Thurmond Scott is stepping down after nearly 12 years as chair.

Carol Golden is an attorney by training and a mother who has made community service her career. While raising her two sons, she has been committed to using her skills and energy to volunteer for several non-profit organizations in the Princeton area and to try to improve the lives of her neighbors. Carol is excited about and appreciative of the opportunity to serve as the Interim Chair of Housing Initiatives of Princeton, an organization that has been fighting homelessness by providing transitional housing to families in Princeton. Through her work with the Joint Consolidation Commission and the Affordable Housing Board of Princeton, Carol has learned and understands about the needs of those in our community who may need a helping hand to be able to thrive here.

Carol was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Trustees of Mercer County Community College and is also on the Board of Greenwood House, a nursing home in Trenton where, for two generations, many of her loved ones have been cared for. Carol also is a Trustee of Planned Parenthood of the Mercer Area (now PPCGNNJ) and is committed to the mission of ensuring quality healthcare to the women of the Trenton area. Carol also served on the Board for many years of 101: (formerly the Princeton Regional Scholarship Foundation), which awards scholarships to graduates of Princeton High School (PHS) who need financial assistance to go to college.

Carol obtained her JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and her BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia.

Carol and Andy are the proud parents of Jake and Elliott. Jake is a Teach for America teacher in New Orleans, and Elliott is a sophomore at Duke University.

Ms. Golden brings the competencies and integrity consistent with HIP’s vision, mission, and board personality. Her dedication to service and our community is laudable. We are thrilled that Ms. Golden will lead HIP’s next organizational life cycle---HIP Succession Planning Committee.

“I feel privileged, and at peace handing over the reins to Ms. Golden” --Ruth Thurmond Scott

Housing Initiatives of Princeton is a community-based organization founded in 2001 that started assisting low-income working families in 2004. The HIP model and achievements are in line with a growing body of research, calling for a “two-generation approach” to break the cycle of poverty. This approach, promoted by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Aspen Institute, fosters the economic well-being of parents while simultaneously supporting the children’s healthy development and education. According to the Casey Foundation, 42 percent of children born to parents at the bottom of the income scale remains there into adulthood. HIP believes as many residents of Princeton, we must not accept this statistic for the low-income working families in our community.
